Dacorum Education Support Centre

12 Week Hub

The 12-week provision is an intensive programme which is aimed at learners identified by their mainstream school to be at risk of permanent exclusion or those who need a period of respite in order to address the barriers to learning they are experiencing. This approach is designed to reengage, reintegrate and return learners to school within a term.

The majority of the centre-based provision addresses and challenges the behaviour which has led to the learner being dual-registered with DESC. Topics covered include: Having a Conversation, My Strengths, Dealing with Anger, Confrontation, Conflict Behaviour and Bullying. Learners are also offered lessons in English, Maths and ICT, as well as more practical subjects such as Music, Art and PE. In addition, learners spend time doing enrichment activities which promote collaborative working, social cohesion and resilience. Meal times or break times are included but are used as learning opportunities in how to behave during unstructured times in school.

All learners at Key Stage 3 undertake Learning Outside the Classroom LOtC which gives them opportunities for developing their leadership skills, team building, communication, confidence, self-esteem, independence, and decision and choice making.

Throughout the programme contact is maintained with the referring school or a new school may be identified. Learners are gradually supported by DESC staff to reintegrate back in to mainstream education. The aim is for learners to leave DESC by the end of the programme and receive outreach support as necessary.
